Between January and August 2016, we worked with VolkerInfra as Acoustic Consultants on an E.ON Energy project to build the Rampion Offshore Wind Farm, off the Sussex coast. VolkerInfra is an international cable and pipeline contractor, responsible for installing underground conduit and cabling to link the new wind farm to the existing UK power network.
The work was carried out using Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD), rather than conventional excavation and trench cable-laying methods, due to the sensitivity of the local area. To add further complexity, drilling had to take place beneath railway lines, the A27 dual carriageway, a recreational park (formerly a municipal waste tip) and out to sea.
Anderson Acoustics provided continuous, unattended noise monitoring and alerts to comply with E.ON’s requirements. In addition to the planned work, the scope of our involvement expanded during the project when we were called on at short notice to provide a Section 61 application for construction works to take place 24 hours a day, 7 days per week (24/7).
To obtain 24/7 permission for the HDD works, we provided a Section 61 application at the Railway and Landfall sites. This process required 3D acoustic modelling to predict construction noise levels at nearby receptors to establish their likely exposure to noise from construction works, as well as undertaking additional communication with the relevant local authorities and Adur and Worthing environmental health teams.
We were pleased to be able to add extra value to this project through our quick turnaround of the required Section 61, which resulted in significant financial savings for the client.
About Anderson Acoustics
We are one of the UK’s leading independent acoustic and construction noise consultancies. We provide noise, vibration and air quality services to construction projects including Crossrail, Thames Tideway and Network Rail’s Great Western Electrification. We are experts in noise management for tunnelling and piling projects and have extensive experience in noise modelling, Section 61 applications and noise monitoring for construction sites. We also have a Complaints and Helpdesk team proving community engagement for construction and aviation clients.
