In order to provide additional primary school facilities, Brighton and Hove City Council converted and upgraded an existing tertiary college space which had been awarded Grade II listing. Anderson Acoustics was asked to provide acoustics advice that was sympathetic to the requirements of the building’s listed status. The building was required to meet Building Control requirements whilst also being in line with the visions of both the client and the architect.
The project required special consideration of walls with glazing and doors that linked classrooms that formed part of the listing. Large volume rooms with high reverberation times and shared activity spaces in corridor spaces that linked classrooms also provided challenges. We carried out detailed calculations and modelling to overcome these, ensuring that the building could be successfully used for primary teaching.
